A few weekends ago my parents came to town for a visit. While they were here, I put my dad and Jeff to work clearing off the snow on our roof. We weren’t having any problems with leaking but I had been watching too many ice dam disaster stories on the news and was starting to get paranoid. I knew there were some really nice days coming up so I figured if we got the snow cleared, our ice dams would have a chance to melt and I wouldn’t have to worry anymore.
I originally wanted them to use a roof rake to clear the snow, but both my dad and Jeff insisted that the snow was too hard for that and the only way to do it was to get up on the roof and shovel. I wasn’t thrilled about the idea, but since I wasn’t doing the job, I didn’t get a vote!
While they worked up on the roof, the kids and I played outside. It was over 30 degrees so the kids were able to stay outside for quite awhile without freezing. We broke out the sand pails to make snow castles and even ventured out to our half-buried swingset in the backyard.
After our snow day, we had a whole week where temps were in the 40s and I was beginning to see the light at the end of this long winter tunnel. Alas, we got a foot and a half of snow last weekend so we are right back to winter (and a roof full of snow) again. Boo!
