B-E-N that spells Ben!

IMG_0210Earlier this month Ben had a Valentine’s Day party at school.  As Ben proudly showed me all his valentines from his friends, I commented to him how all the kids wrote their own name and how impressed I was.  Ben had worked on his valentines the morning before the party (which was my fault since I had forgotten to buy them until the night before – bad mommy alert!).  After putting stickers and stamps on them he said he didn’t want to write his name, it was too hard.  Since he had worked so hard on the stickers and stamps (and because I am a sucker for his cute face), I let him slide and signed his valentines for him.  (Enabler!  Bad mommy alert #2!)

Ben has never been very excited about writing.  It makes him frustrated and he gives up easily when he doesn’t get it right on the first try.  Knowing that he has another whole year of preschool ahead of him, I haven’t been pushing him to work on it at home and figured he would get it all in good time.  But after realizing that all his friends write their own name, he seemed a little more eager to work on his writing skills.  Jeff and I seized the opportunity and we’ve been working on it in the two weeks since then and he’s made major progress!  We’re so proud of him and he is super proud of himself too which is the best part!

Marshall never was excited about writing his name either. About 2 years ago I bought a bunch of workbooks for him to work on at home (handwriting and writing numbers especially). It really helped out for pre-school and he still does them now when he is bored. I am sure you thought of this already, but the activities in there are fun and half the time he didnt even realize he was "working". The ABC were good too because he had to practice each letter, but there were other things to do too. Good Luck!

Way to go Ben-keep up the good work! Writing is hard because it is all the tiny muscles in your hand getting stronger! Tell your mom to give herself a break too-even the best of us moms don't always make our kids do the hard stuff (Alert-me calling myself a super mom)!

GO Ben!!! Lilly is learning to write her letters and she gets very frusterated when she can't do it exactly right. I just encourage her that practice makes perfect and soon she will be able to do it too!
