Happy Birthday in Spooner, WI

Awhile back, on a whim, we bought a Groupon for a dinner train ride for four in Spooner, Wisconsin with Katie and Chris.  We decided to book the trip for the weekend of Jeff’s birthday and make a weekend out of it.  Not the most glamorous birthday destination but when you are celebrating a 31st birthday and have two kids, jetting off to Vegas just really isn’t in the cards.

The train was advertised as an “Elegant Dinner Train” with “climate controlled” interior.  The weekend ended up being one of the HOTEST we had in a long time and unfortunately for us “climate controlled” meant open windows and ceiling fans.  Dripping sweat down our backs did cut back on the elegant factor a little bit, but we still had a great time.

Jeff and I bought train conductor hats for the kids so Katie and I decided we better model them for a picture.

Jeff got in on the action too.

And a few more pics of our train fun.

Spooner is a tiny little town but it had a really cute little downtown area and lucky for us that included a movie theatre.  As most of you know, Jeff and I are big Harry Potter nerds.  Jeff’s birthday weekend was also opening weekend of Harry Potter and we were determined to see it!  The movie theatre had a cute old-timey charm and most importantly it was not packed to the gills with other HP nerds so we got seats no problem.  I forgot my camera, so all I have to show is this crappy cell phone pic.

When we weren’t on the train or catching movies, we killed some time at a dive bar called Skaggs that was right next to our hotel.  The bar itself was charming (in a small town bar kind of way) but the clientele……well, check out the bartender and her shirt – or lack thereof – in the cell phone pic I snapped.  That kind of sums it up.

Lucky for us our hotel had a swimming pool that was open all night and you could order pizza from the front desk so we had other entertainment options.  It was such a fun weekend and is always nice to get away and have a little adult time.  We owe Janet a huge thank you because she watched the kids all by herself for the weekend.  So, THANK YOU (again)!

We had a family birthday celebration when we got back to town – here are a few pics from that too.  Happy Birthday babe!  Almost 10 years of birthdays together and they just keep getting better!
